From City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services There has been
much concern regarding immunizations and vaccinations in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. This document serves as the current recommendations and strategies that the City of Houston Health Department has adopted: Emergency rooms are not the appropriate location for immunizations. Please go to the City, County, Hospital District and Community Clinics for these services. In addition, if you are a shelter resident
(Reliant Complex or George R. Brown Convention Center) these services are being offered at those locations. At the George R. Brown, we are strongly encouraging all residents to have both the tetanus and Hepatitis A
vaccinations. We have established two clinics at the George R. Brown to accommodate the residents there. Additional services may be possible through mobile clinics at the various shelters throughout the
city. The current CDC recommendations are as follows and are based on experience with major hurricanes such as Andrew and the Midwest Floods FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN SHELTERS, the issues are different. The concern is large numbers of people in close proximity to each
other. Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccination are recommended. EVACCUEES NOT IN SHELTERS are encouraged like all others to keep their immunizations current particularly Tetanus. For VOLUNTEERS
, no special immunizations are recommended. To find out the location of the nearest clinic, please call ASK A NURSE: 713.633.CALL. For further information, please contact |
