Letter from the Executive Director
A Story of Hope

My letter this time is a little different.  Without the help of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, Early Childhood Intervention, Medicaid, the George Foundation and supporters like you, our services targeting children with disabilities aged 0-3 would not be available. Because our programs and services are only possible with the support of people like you, I wanted to give you a glimpse of the impact your generosity is having.

A few weeks ago, in the middle of a wild and stressful day, our Camps, Counseling and Case Management Program was holding one of its regular Gymboree groups for children with disabilities.  My mood improved listening to the singing and laughter coming from down the hall.  Then, I heard a little bump and looked up to see a precious red-haired girl on a walker moving into my office.   She said, "Hi! I'm Hope."    My day, like most people's who meet her, immediately improved.  She is bright, engaging and adorable -and she has an amazing spirit of strength.

Hope has been a client of United Cerebral Palsy's Infant Development/Early Childhood Intervention Program for a few years.  In that time, she has made incredible progress, and has become a very special part of our family.  Her Mom made a lovely scrapbook as a gift to her therapists of some of her developmental milestones when she graduated from our Infant Development Program at age three.  They agreed to let us show a little of the journey they shared with some of UCP's incredible staff.

Even though born with a less than cooperative body, Hope and her family, with the help of her UCP therapists, have worked incredibly hard to help her achieve her highest level of development.   The obstacles she faces, the barriers she overcomes and the inestimable amount of time, effort and love her family provide make her story like hundreds of other children in our programs.  What parents of typically developing children may take for granted; a wave, a step; a spoken word,…become major victories which will lead, ultimately to greater independence of the child with a disability.  I admit that I am biased.  But, I also know that the level of commitment, skill and passion of our Infant Development Program staff and the services provided are second to none, and essential to the success of the children whose lives they touch.

Working with families like this little girl's gives all of us a sense of purpose and accomplishment.  Without question, she was aptly named, and we are grateful that with your help we were able to be part of her story of Hope.

Elise Hough
Executive Director
